About Us

Founded by Chairman Dwayne Irvin, the KCHSDA local chapter of the High School Democrats of America (HSDA) was created out of a deep desire to empower the next generation of leaders. As a passionate high school student with a commitment to civic engagement and progressive change, Dwayne envisioned a space where students like him—young people with a drive for justice and democracy—could come together to make a real impact.

KCHSDA was established as a federation of the national HSDA organization, rooted in the belief that high school students deserve a seat at the table in shaping their communities and their country. Our chapter is dedicated to providing students with opportunities to get involved in politics, participate in meaningful community service, and champion democratic values such as equity, inclusion, and civic responsibility.

Since its founding, KCHSDA has grown into a vibrant community of young leaders working to amplify youth voices, support local initiatives, and inspire political engagement among teens. We believe that the future of democracy depends on the active participation of all generations—and we're proud to lead the way.

Our Core Values

At KCHSDA, our work is driven by a strong foundation of core values that reflect our commitment to progress, leadership, and service. These principles guide everything we do—from our events and advocacy to the way we engage with one another and our community.

🔹 Civic Engagement: We believe that young people have a powerful voice in democracy. By participating in political discussions, voter outreach, and local initiatives, we ensure that youth are not only heard—but respected and represented. Our chapter regularly organizes voter education drives, attends local government meetings, and encourages members to be active citizens within their schools and neighborhoods.

🔹 Equity and Inclusion: Diversity is our strength. We strive to create a welcoming, inclusive space where all students—regardless of background, identity, or belief—can lead, learn, and thrive. We intentionally uplift underrepresented voices, partner with inclusive organizations, and ensure that every member has a role and a platform.

🔹 Community Service: Democracy is more than politics—it’s about people. Through hands-on service projects and local outreach, we aim to build stronger, more compassionate communities. Our chapter leads initiatives like food drives, neighborhood clean-ups, and volunteer efforts that directly support those in need.

🔹 Youth Empowerment: We are not the leaders of tomorrow—we are leaders today. KCHSDA exists to equip young people with the skills, confidence, and opportunities to lead with purpose. Members gain experience in public speaking, organizing, advocacy, and policy—all while growing their influence in real-world settings.

🔹 Progressive Action: We stand for justice, equality, and forward-thinking solutions. Our chapter actively supports causes that align with progressive Democratic values and fight for a better, fairer future for all. Whether it's climate action, educational equity, or civil rights, we take clear, informed stances and mobilize others to act.

Making a Difference

At KCHSDA, we believe that meaningful change starts at the local level. Through our commitment to civic action, community engagement, and youth leadership, we’ve become a trusted force for good in Kansas City and a model chapter within the High School Democrats of America (HSDA) network.

🌱 Community Service Projects: We organize and participate in a wide range of hands-on service initiatives that directly support Kansas City residents. From food and clothing drives to park clean-ups and neighborhood revitalization, we work to meet real needs in our community. Our annual “Winter Warmth” drive has provided hundreds of coats, gloves, and essentials to local families in need.

🗳️ Voter Education & Registration: We host voter registration drives and informational sessions to educate young people about their voting rights, the importance of local elections, and how to get involved in the democratic process—even before they’re eligible to vote. We’ve helped dozens of first-time voters register and engage in civic life with confidence and purpose.

🎓 Civic Leadership Development: KCHSDA empowers high school students with training and real-world experience in leadership, advocacy, public speaking, and organizing. We give members the tools to be not just participants, but leaders in political and social movements. Many of our members have gone on to speak at city hall, lead school board initiatives, and intern with local representatives.

🫱🏽‍🫲🏿 Coalition Building: We collaborate with local nonprofits, advocacy groups, and other youth-led organizations to amplify our collective impact. By working together, we expand our reach and deepen our influence on issues that matter—from racial justice to education equity. Through these partnerships, we’ve co-hosted forums, led community conversations, and supported grassroots campaigns.

🌍 Expanding Youth Voices Beyond Kansas City: As an active chapter in the national HSDA network, KCHSDA contributes to nationwide initiatives, national days of action, and policy campaigns. Our work serves as a model for chapters across the country looking to build locally and think globally. Our members regularly participate in national HSDA events, helping shape policy discussions and youth platforms at the federal level.

Our aspirations for the future

As we look ahead, KCHSDA is committed to building on our momentum and growing our presence both locally and nationally. Our vision is bold, and our mission is clear: to empower more young people to lead, serve, and shape the future of democracy.

🚀 Increase Chapter Membership: We aim to expand our chapter by actively recruiting passionate, driven students from high schools across the Kansas City metro area. Through outreach campaigns, school partnerships, and peer engagement, we will build a diverse and energized membership base ready to take action. Goal: Double our active membership over the next year and establish a strong presence in every major high school in the region.

🌟 Become One of the Largest Teen-Led Organizations in Kansas City: Our chapter is more than a student group—it’s a movement. We aspire to become one of the most influential, teen-led civic organizations in the Kansas City area, recognized for our leadership, impact, and innovation. Goal: Position KCHSDA as a leading voice for youth in local politics, social advocacy, and community engagement.

🤝 Expand Community Partnerships: To broaden our reach and deepen our impact, we will continue forming alliances with local nonprofits, elected officials, educators, and advocacy groups. These partnerships will amplify our work and open new doors for member involvement and real-world leadership.
